Coordinated by Carlos González, the present volume presents the papers read at the Study Days on the vihuela held in Gijón in July  2002.

This volume includes a series of central works on the instrument. The various articles were first presented at the symposium on the vihuela that was celebrated in Gijón in July, 2002. Within its almost 200 pages are studies on the origin of the instrument and references in documentary and literary sources; the spread of the vihuela to Italy, Portugal and the New World, studies on instrument makers or violeros, on organological matters, and even on such a customarily neglected topic as instrument strings. The appendices include, in addition to a wide reference bibliography, a transcription of the ordinances of the vihuela and string manufacturers’ guilds from Seville, Granada, Lisbon, Toledo, Valencia and Madrid.
